The view from Dale Head

One of my favourite spots in the Lakes. I wanted to see how much of the landscape you can actually see from up there, and what’s hidden behind the hills.

From the top

I’ve always loved the view from Dale Head, especially looking out over the Newlands Valley. This map is a small attempt to work out where the ridgelines fall, which fells you can pick out, and how much land is tucked out of sight.

Use From the summit to look around, or 3D overview to get a sense of the shape of the surrounding hills.

A note on the map

It’s made from real terrain heights, with the viewpoint set at the 753 m summit. The panorama shows the contours of the landscape rather than a photograph of it. In Visible ground, green means the model thinks you could see that patch of land; grey means another hill gets in the way.

There are no trees, buildings or clouds in this calculation, and small features may be missed. Drag the panorama to turn, or use the compass buttons.
